Background of the Study
Maternal health is a crucial aspect of public health, and nutrition plays a fundamental role in ensuring the well-being of pregnant women and their unborn children. Poor nutrition during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes such as low birth weight, maternal anemia, and preterm births (Olowokere et al., 2023). Nurses, particularly in primary healthcare settings, are uniquely positioned to educate pregnant women about the importance of proper nutrition. In Niger State, a region with significant health challenges, nutritional education can be an essential intervention in improving maternal health outcomes.
Despite the importance of nutrition during pregnancy, many women in Niger State face barriers to accessing proper nutritional advice, including lack of awareness, limited healthcare access, and cultural factors. Nurses, through patient education and counseling, can bridge this gap and promote healthy dietary habits among pregnant women. This study aims to investigate the effect of nutrition education provided by nurses on maternal health in Niger State, with a particular focus on how these educational efforts influence maternal outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Maternal malnutrition remains a significant challenge in Niger State, contributing to poor health outcomes for both mothers and infants. While nurses are involved in providing nutrition education to pregnant women, the impact of these efforts on maternal health has not been sufficiently evaluated. The study seeks to assess how nutrition education by nurses influences maternal health in Niger State, examining the effectiveness of these interventions and the factors that may enhance or hinder their success.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effect of nutrition education by nurses on maternal health in Niger State.
2. To evaluate the changes in maternal health outcomes after receiving nutrition education from nurses.
3. To identify the barriers and facilitators to effective nutrition education in Niger State.
Research Questions
1. What effect does nutrition education by nurses have on maternal health in Niger State?
2. How does nutrition education by nurses influence maternal health outcomes in Niger State?
3. What barriers and facilitators affect the delivery and effectiveness of nutrition education by nurses in Niger State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nutrition education by nurses significantly improves maternal health outcomes in Niger State.
2. Maternal health outcomes such as weight gain, anemia, and birth outcomes improve following nutrition education provided by nurses in Niger State.
3. Barriers such as cultural practices and lack of resources hinder the effectiveness of nutrition education by nurses in Niger State.
